Ivan Matiyeshyn is a prominent member of the Ukrainian business community. Whilst he was born in Arkhangelsk region of Russia his parents are Ukrainians who were forced to live in Siberia following the repression of the 1930’s. Ivan studied oil and gas engineering in Ivano-Frankivsk Oil and Gas Institute and specialized in well drilling. He has spent his whole career in the oil and gas industry rising from an assistant driller in Nefteyugansk to assistant of the General Director of “Uraynaftogas”.
In 1992 after the fall of USSR he started in Tyumen region (Russian Federation) his own enterprise “Oil Company Krasnoleninskneftegaz” supplying construction and maintenance services to oil and gas companies. Today he employs more than 2000 people, 70% of whom are Ukrainians who are legally working in Russia.
In 2008 he established his Charitable Foundation “Ukraine – Holy Family” devoted to the revival of Ukrainian cultural and spiritual values and support for the young scientists. Like many Ukrainian businessmen Ivan is concerned at the lack of vision and direction in Ukrainian politics. So in 2008 he considered entering politics. During this time he met Viktor Tkachuk and decided to support the “People First” concept to redesign the Ukrainian political system and re-affirm Ukraine’s democratic values.
